AI blog writer vs hiring a freelance writer: cost and fit

By Giovanni Rasulo Updated Prices checked November 2026

Short answer

An AI blog tool is cheaper per draft; a freelance writer is better where judgment, first-hand detail or voice carry the post. GrowGanic Pro is $99 a month for up to 30 articles, about $3.30 each at full use, plus the time to review each one. Compare total cost per published post using your own writer quote and your own hourly value. For many sites the best answer is both: the tool drafts, a person edits.

This is a documented comparison, not a test. Tool prices and limits come from the vendors' pages and listings, read in November 2026. We quote no freelance rate, because we have no primary source for one: the examples below use made-up round numbers, labeled as such. CheaperStack has not used these tools for client work.

GrowGanic: its Shopify App Store listing shows Pro at $99 a month and Business at $299 a month, with up to 30 and 150 published articles a month, and its pricing page shows euros in the EU. Outrank as on our GrowGanic vs Outrank page, checked October 2026. Neither tool lists a writer; both leave review to you.

The formula, with example numbers

The comparison that matters is total cost per published post, not price per draft:

  • Freelance: the writer's fee + your time to brief and approve.
  • AI tool: monthly price ÷ posts published + your review and editing time × your hourly value.

Example, with invented round numbers: say you publish 8 posts a month, a writer quotes $120 a post, and you value an hour of your time at $40. Freelance: 8 × ($120 + 15 minutes of briefing, $10) = $1,040. AI tool: $99 + 8 × 45 minutes of review, $30 each = $339. The gap depends entirely on your inputs, and on whether 45 minutes is enough to make a post good. Replace every number with your own before you decide.

Two things the arithmetic hides. First, a tool that costs $3.30 a draft is not a $3.30 post: unreviewed volume is where the risk is. Second, a writer's fee buys judgment, interviews and original detail that a research engine cannot supply.

What Google says

Google does not ask who wrote a page. It says AI-generated content is not against its rules by itself, and that it is critical to manually fact-check and review it before publishing. Its spam policies cover scaled content produced mainly to manipulate rankings, whatever method makes it. So the question is not human or AI, but whether each post is accurate, useful and checked. Our eight-check routine works the same for both.

Where GrowGanic fits

GrowGanic is an autonomous SEO engine: add a domain and it researches the keywords, writes and scores the articles, publishes them to your site or a hosted blog, and tracks the rankings. It replaces the research and first draft, not the person who approves the post. It has no backlink index. Draft mode is available on WordPress, Shopify and HubSpot, and it publishes live by default, so switch drafts on first; see publishing to WordPress safely. By its own account, the hosted copy of the free article stays out of Google until the plan is paid; connecting your site or a subdomain before the first article avoids that.

The free options

  • Writing it yourself costs only time, and your own knowledge is what search results lack.
  • Google Search Console ($0): shows whether either route earns impressions; see the indexing statuses.

Who should keep a freelance writer

  • Sites that sell on expertise, where the post is the proof.
  • Regulated topics, where a wrong claim has legal weight.
  • Brands with a distinct voice, where generic drafts would need a full rewrite.
  • Teams with no one to review. A writer who owns accuracy removes that job.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI blog writer cheaper than a freelance writer?

On tool price alone, usually: GrowGanic Pro is $99 a month for up to 30 articles, about $3.30 each at full use. But someone still has to review every article, and that time has a cost. Compare total cost per published post, using your own rate.

Can I use both?

Yes, and many sites should. Let the tool draft and research, and have a writer or editor review, add first-hand detail and approve. That keeps the cost down and the judgment human.

Will Google penalize AI-written posts?

Google says AI-generated content is not against its rules by itself, and that it is critical to manually fact-check and review it before publishing. Its spam policies target content made at scale mainly to manipulate rankings, however it is produced.

What does a freelance writer cost?

It varies by writer, topic and length, and we do not quote a market rate because we have no primary source for one. Use your own quotes in the formula on this page.

When is a freelance writer clearly better?

When the post needs first-hand expertise, interviews, original data or a regulated claim, or when the brand voice is the product.
