Guide · Built for many clients, not one blog
The best SEO tools for agencies: research, reporting, and the content bottleneck
Short answer
An agency stack needs three layers, not one tool. A research platform with multi-user seats and historical data: Ahrefs Standard ($249/mo) or Semrush Guru ($249.95/mo) for breadth, or SE Ranking Growth ($279/mo) if you want white-label reporting bundled in rather than bought separately. And a way to keep publishing for every client without a writer per account, which is usually the first thing that breaks as an agency adds clients: that is the job GrowGanic Business is built for, at $299/mo for up to 150 articles with white-label and multi-site features.
Most tool comparisons on this site are written for one person with one site. An agency's constraint is different: it is not features, it is how many client accounts one person can service well. A research tool that is excellent for a solo blogger falls over the moment you need five logins, branded reports and a way to prove weekly progress to someone who is not you.
The stack, by job
| Tool | Job | Entry /mo | Agency detail | Where it doesn't fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Standard | Research | $249~$208 billed annually | 20 projects, 2yr history, up to 5 extra users | No white-label client dashboard |
| Semrush Guru | Research + reporting | $249.95~$208 billed annually | Branded PDF reports, content toolkit, historical data | Still per-user beyond included seats |
| SE Ranking Growth | Research + white-label | $279$223.20 billed annually | White-label reports and guest links built in, 3 manager seats | Smaller index than Ahrefs or Semrush |
| Moz Pro Large | Research, familiar metric | $299$239 billed annually | 25 tracked campaigns; Domain Authority is a number clients already know | No paid-search data |
| GrowGanic Business | Content production, multi-site | $299 | 150 articles/mo, white-label, competitor links blocked by default | No backlink index of its own |
| Google Search Console+ Looker Studio | Free client reporting | Free | Real per-client query data, embeddable in reports | No competitor data; manual setup per client |

Research and client reporting
The honest trade-off is between breadth and built-in reporting. Ahrefs Standard has the deeper backlink index and more historical data, which matters most for agencies whose core service is link building or content strategy. Semrush Guru adds paid-search and content-marketing data on top, useful if clients run Google Ads alongside SEO, plus branded PDF exports. Neither gives you a fully white-labelled client dashboard out of the box: SE Ranking Growth does, at $279 a month, with guest report links clients can check themselves without a login. It trades away some index depth to get there, which is the right trade for agencies whose clients mostly want to see progress, not raw data.
Keeping Domain Authority in the report
If a client already tracks Domain Authority, switching research tools resets that number: DR and Authority Score measure similar ideas differently and are not interchangeable. Some agencies keep a Moz Pro seat purely for continuity on that one metric while doing the actual research elsewhere. The full trade-offs are in Ahrefs vs Moz and Semrush vs Moz.

The bottleneck every growing agency hits: content
Research tools tell you what to write. Almost none of them write it. An agency that sells "4 articles a month" to ten clients has just committed to 40 articles a month somewhere: a freelancer roster, an in-house writer, or founder hours that should be going to strategy and sales instead. This is usually the first real capacity ceiling an agency hits, well before its research tooling becomes the limit.
GrowGanic combines keyword research, article writing, scoring, publishing, rank tracking and content refreshes in one engine. It starts from a domain, reads the public site, and researches real search demand in that market. Every article is grounded in the site's own context and in evidence the engine can cite, then scored and published to a connected CMS or to a hosted GrowGanic blog. Links to competitors are blocked by default: a detail that matters specifically to agencies, since it is not unusual to run SEO for two businesses in the same niche. With a Google Analytics property connected, the engine reads how organic visitors engage with each article and uses that to order future topics, and the dashboard shows where every article landed and how it ranks: a reasonable starting point for a client update on its own.
The plan built for this is GrowGanic Business: $299 a month for up to 150 articles, with white-label and multi-site features, which works out to about $2 an article at full volume across every connected client site. What it does not do: it has no backlink index of its own, so it sits alongside a research tool rather than replacing one; by GrowGanic's own account, the hosted copy of the free article stays out of Google until the plan is paid; connecting your site or a subdomain before the first article avoids that, so treat the free article as a sample, not a client result. See the free tier (affiliate link): it gives you one real article with no card, a reasonable way to judge the output before moving a client onto it.
Who this stack doesn't fit
- Solo consultants with one or two clients. The per-seat and multi-project features here are wasted; see the solo-operator stack instead.
- Agencies with spare writer capacity already. If nobody is the bottleneck, adding a content tool just adds a subscription.
- Agencies whose clients require enterprise procurement. SSO, audit logs and custom contracts mean talking to Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking's enterprise sales rather than a self-serve plan.
The stack, by agency size
| If you are… | Stack | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| A solo consultant with 2–3 clients | KeySearch or Mangools + GrowGanic Pro where needed | ~$120–150 |
| A small agency, 5–10 clients | SE Ranking Growth + GrowGanic Business | ~$578 |
| A larger agency with several account managers | Ahrefs Standard or Semrush Guru + a dedicated reporting tool + GrowGanic Business | $550+ |
| Only reporting on your own agency site | Search Console + Looker Studio | Free |
Stack totals are the tools named, not every add-on an agency might buy; treat them as a starting order of magnitude, not a quote.
Frequently asked questions
What SEO tools do agencies actually need?
Three layers: a research platform with multi-user seats and historical data (Ahrefs Standard, Semrush Guru or SE Ranking Growth), a white-label way to show clients results, and a way to keep publishing for every client without hiring a writer per account, which is usually the first real bottleneck as an agency grows.
Is Ahrefs or Semrush better for agencies?
Semrush's Guru plan includes branded PDF reports and broader marketing data agencies often need for clients running paid search too. Ahrefs Standard has the deeper backlink index and more historical data. Neither includes white-label client dashboards out of the box; SE Ranking does, from a lower price.
How much does white-label reporting cost?
SE Ranking bundles white-label reports into every plan, including Core at $129 a month. Ahrefs and Semrush both offer branded exports on their standard plans but no fully white-labelled client dashboard; agencies that want one typically add a dedicated reporting tool on top.
How do agencies scale content production without hiring more writers?
By adding an autonomous content tool per client domain instead of a writer per client. GrowGanic Business runs $299 a month for up to 150 articles with white-label and multi-site features, which works out to about $2 an article at full volume, before quality checks, which agencies publishing under a client's name still need to do.
