Guide · How the pricing actually works
SEO tool pricing, explained: why the sticker price is the least useful number
Short answer
SEO tools price by at least six different units (seats, credits, words, documents, articles and projects), so headline prices are not comparable. Convert each plan to the monthly cost you would actually pay (billing, seats and add-ons included), then divide by the output you care about, usually published articles. And check the date: several major vendors restructured their plans in the past year, so many published prices describe plans that no longer exist.
The six pricing models
| Model | Example | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Per seat | Jasper Pro, $69 per seat per month | Cost multiplies with every person who needs access |
| Unlimited users | Clearscope, $129 a month for any team size | Expensive for one, cheap for many |
| Credits | Keywords Everywhere, 100,000 credits for $84 a year | A single search can burn dozens; credits expire after 12 months |
| Word allowance | Koala AI, 45,000 words from $25 a month | Long articles use the allowance fast |
| Document or article allowance | GrowGanic Pro, up to 30 articles for $99; SEOZilla, about 10 for $49.99 or 30 for $99.99 | Compare per article, not per plan |
| Lifetime licence | Ubersuggest, $290 once instead of $29 a month | Terms and limits can change after purchase |
One formula that puts them on the same scale
Cost per article = (monthly plan price on your billing + extra seats + add-ons you need + writing cost) ÷ articles you actually publish per month
The “writing cost” term is the one comparisons leave out, and it is usually the largest. A research tool with no writing features is not a cheap content stack if someone still has to write every word.
A worked example: eight articles a month
| Stack | Tools per month | Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Research tool only | $24 KeySearch | All writing, optimising and publishing time |
| Research + editor | $83 KeySearch + Surfer Discovery | All writing and publishing time |
| Incumbent + editor | $188 Ahrefs Lite + Surfer Discovery | All writing and publishing time |
| Autonomous tool | $99 GrowGanic Pro | Your review and first-hand additions |
Put your own hourly rate (or a writer's fee) into the “plus” column and the ranking often reverses. For someone who writes quickly and enjoys it, the $24 stack wins. For someone whose hours are worth more elsewhere, the tool bill is the smaller part of the cost.
Where the real cost hides
1. Monthly versus annual
Annual billing typically saves between 15% and 20%: about 17% on Ahrefs (though not on its $29 Starter plan), around 16% on Semrush, 20% on Frase and Moz, about 17% on Surfer and Clearscope, and two months free on KeySearch. Vendors headline the annual figure. Budget on monthly until you have used the tool on a real project.
2. Seats and users
The same plan can cost double or triple once colleagues need their own login. Always price the team you actually have.
3. Add-ons
Extra users, extra projects, extra inventory pages (Clearscope charges $25 a month per 100 on Essentials) and extra AI drafts. They rarely appear on comparison tables and often decide the real price.
4. Credit burn
Credit-based tools look cheap until you learn how many credits a single action consumes. With Keywords Everywhere, one Google search showing many related keywords can use 10 to 50 credits.
5. Promotions that become “the price”
Cheap entry prices hide small allowances. SEOZilla's $19.99 plan covers about four articles on WordPress only, while its Pro plan costs $99.99 for about thirty. First-month discounts (GrowGanic's $50 first month, offered once) are genuine, but they are not the ongoing price, and neither should be budgeted as one.
6. Plan restructures
In the past year Frase replaced its $15 Solo and $45 Basic plans with a $49 Starter plan; SE Ranking retired its Essential, Pro and Business tiers for Core at $129 and Growth at $279; and Surfer replaced Essential and Scale with Discovery, Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind. Any article quoting the old names is describing prices you cannot buy.

A pre-purchase checklist
- What is the price on monthly billing?
- How many seats does the plan include, and what does another cost?
- What is the unit (credits, words, documents, articles), and how fast will you use it?
- Which add-ons would you realistically need within three months?
- Is the price on the page a promotion, and what does it renew at?
- Is there a free tier or no-card trial to test with first?
- When was the price you are reading last checked?
If the answer to question six is yes, use it before anything else. For content tools specifically, GrowGanic's free tier gives you one real article without a card, which lets you calculate cost per article from actual output rather than a sales page. Try the free tier (affiliate link).
Frequently asked questions
Why are SEO tools so expensive?
Tools with large keyword and backlink databases pay continuously to crawl and store the web, and that cost is passed on. Tools without their own index are usually cheaper because they license data or focus on a narrower job.
How do I compare SEO tool prices fairly?
Convert every plan to a monthly cost on the billing you will actually use, add the seats and add-ons you need, then divide by the output you care about, usually published articles per month. That cost per article is comparable across tools that price by seat, credit, word or article.
Are lifetime deals on SEO tools worth it?
They can be when the vendor is established and the tool covers a stable need: Ubersuggest's $290 lifetime licence pays for itself in about ten months against its $29 monthly plan. The risk is that lifetime terms, limits or the product itself can change.
