Autonomous AI SEO tools compared: cost per article, and what to check before you trust one

By Giovanni Rasulo Updated Prices checked October 2026 5 tools

Short answer

On cost per article at full volume, GrowGanic and Outrank are level at about $3.30 on $99 plans, Byword is close behind, SEOZilla is about $5 on its two smallest plans and $3.33 on Pro, and Koala prices by words rather than articles. Price is the least important difference. What decides whether one of these helps or hurts a site is control: whether articles carry your canonical URL, whether they are checked before they publish, and whether you can review or stop them.

These tools do something the rest of this site's comparisons do not: they remove the writer. You describe a niche, and articles appear on your site on a schedule. That changes the economics of content completely, and it makes quality control your responsibility in a way it never was when a person wrote every post.

Three shapes of AI content tool

  • Autonomous publishers research, write and publish on a schedule: GrowGanic, Outrank, SEOZilla.
  • Bulk generators produce many articles at once for you to publish: Byword.
  • AI writers draft on request while you choose the topics, and some now post to your CMS: Koala.

Editors with AI features (Surfer, Frase, Clearscope) are a different category again, covered in Surfer alternatives.

The part that matters more than price: Google's scaled-content policy

Google has said repeatedly that it judges content on quality, not on whether AI helped write it. Its spam policies, however, explicitly cover scaled content abuse: producing large numbers of pages primarily to manipulate rankings rather than to help readers, regardless of how they are produced. The fuller guide, with Google's 2026 updates and a publishing checklist, is in does Google penalize AI content.

That is the real risk with every tool on this page. A tool that makes 30 articles a month easy also makes 30 thin articles a month easy. The protection is not a particular vendor; it is how the tool is set up and whether someone looks at what it publishes. Which leads to the checklist.

Seven things to check before trusting any of them

  1. Canonical URL on your domain. Articles should carry your site's canonical, so search engines credit you, not the vendor's blog.
  2. Publishing to your own CMS (or a hosted option on your domain), rather than content that only lives on the vendor's platform.
  3. Pre-publish quality checks. Some form of scoring against on-page signals before an article goes live, not after.
  4. A way to review or pause. You should be able to stop the schedule and edit or unpublish anything.
  5. Structured data and metadata: titles, descriptions and schema generated properly, not left blank.
  6. What happens when you cancel. Articles already published to your site should stay yours.
  7. Real first-hand additions from you. Screenshots, your own numbers, your opinion. No tool can supply these, and they are what separates a useful article from a scaled one.

The tools, one by one

GrowGanic

Researches keywords for your niche, writes, scores each article against on-page signals before publishing, and publishes on a schedule. It publishes to WordPress, Shopify and HubSpot, to any other site through a signed webhook, or to a blog GrowGanic hosts for you on your own domain; a blog on Webflow, Ghost, Wix or Squarespace can also be moved over in one click, with old links kept. Articles delivered to your own site carry your canonical URL. Pro is $99 a month for up to 30 articles ($50 for the first month, offered once after your first article); Business is $299 for 150, with white-label and multi-site features. The free tier publishes one article with no card, and by GrowGanic's own account, the hosted copy of the free article stays out of Google until the plan is paid; connecting your site or a subdomain before the first article avoids that. Try the free tier (affiliate link).

Outrank

Publishes one long-form article a day, up to 30 a month, for $99. The same volume model and price as GrowGanic Pro; compare the output and the integrations with your CMS rather than the price. It also builds backlinks, by link exchange: you earn credits by hosting links to other sites in your own articles. The full comparison is in GrowGanic vs Outrank.

Byword

Built for batches: $99 for 25 articles, $299 for 80, $999 for 300. Best when you want to generate a large set at once (for example a programmatic section of a site), and review before publishing. At high volume the checklist above matters most.

SEOZilla

Automated drafting with internal linking and publishing to WordPress, Ghost, Webflow and Shopify. Basic is $19.99 for about four articles on WordPress only, Starter $49.99 for about ten and Pro $99.99 for about thirty, so it is the most expensive per article here at low volume (about $5) and level with the leaders on Pro. Plans run on credits, and a 3-day trial needs no card.

Koala AI

SEO-oriented drafts priced by words: $25 a month for 45,000, $49 for 100,000 and $99 for 250,000, with a free start and no card. It now lists publishing to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Ghost and webhooks on every plan, and a content calendar autopilot from the $99 plan, so the line between writer and publisher is blurring. Good value if you want AI help while choosing the topics yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is an autonomous AI SEO tool?

A tool that goes from a niche or keyword list to a published article without a human writing it: it researches keywords, drafts the article, checks it against on-page signals and publishes it to your site on a schedule.

Does Google penalise AI-written content?

Google says it evaluates content on quality and helpfulness rather than how it was produced. Its spam policies do target scaled content abuse: producing many pages primarily to manipulate rankings, however they are made. Publishing volume without quality control is the risk, not the use of AI itself.

What is the cheapest autonomous AI SEO tool per article?

At full monthly volume, GrowGanic and Outrank both work out at about $3.30 per article on their $99 plans, and Byword at about $3.33 to $3.96 depending on pack size. SEOZilla's Basic and Starter plans are about $5 per article and its Pro plan about $3.33. Koala is priced by words, from $25 for 45,000, and now lists publishing integrations.
