Surfer SEO alternatives: cheaper editors, free options, and tools that do the whole job

By Giovanni Rasulo Updated Prices checked September 2026 7 alternatives

Short answer

Surfer now starts at $59 a month with its Discovery plan, close to but no longer matching Frase Starter at $49, so the closest alternative is not much cheaper, it is different: Frase is better at research and briefs, Surfer at optimising a draft. The cheapest AI writing option is Koala AI from $9 a month. If what you really want is published articles rather than an editor, GrowGanic researches, writes, scores and publishes for $99 a month, with one free article and no card.

Most Surfer comparisons you will find still quote the Essential and Scale plans. Those no longer exist. Surfer's current line-up is Discovery at $59, Standard at $119, Pro at $219 and Peace of Mind at $359 a month on monthly billing (roughly $49, $99, $182 and $299 billed annually), with no permanent free plan. Discovery is a single-seat plan with a limited document allowance and page tracking.

That price change matters for this page, because the old argument (“Surfer is expensive, here is a cheaper editor”) has mostly gone. The useful question now is whether an optimisation editor is the right shape of tool for how you work.

Entry plans on monthly billing, checked September 2026. Allowances differ by vendor (words, documents or articles), so compare on what you publish per month rather than on the headline price.

First, decide what shape of tool you need

Content tools fall into three shapes, and most disappointment comes from buying the wrong one:

  • Editors (Surfer, Clearscope) score a draft someone else wrote against what currently ranks. Excellent if you have writers. Useless if you do not.
  • Research-and-brief tools (Frase) turn a keyword into an outline and a brief. They shorten writing; they do not remove it.
  • Autonomous tools (GrowGanic, SEOZilla) take a niche or keyword list and return published, scored articles. They remove the writing step and the per-article hand-off.

If you are a writer, an editor is the right tool and Surfer is a good one. If you are a founder or marketer who needs articles to exist, an editor is an expensive way to be told what is wrong with a draft you did not have time to write.

The cheaper Surfer SEO alternative

At $59, Surfer Discovery is priced close to the other entry editors, so “cheaper” depends on what you count.

Per month, Koala AI at $25 is the cheapest way to get SEO-oriented drafts. You lose Surfer's depth of SERP-based scoring, and you should expect to edit more.

Per finished article, the maths is different. An editor still needs a writer, and writing time is the largest line in any content budget. GrowGanic Pro at $99 a month covers up to 30 researched, scored and published articles, about $3.30 each at full volume. For anyone publishing more than a handful of posts a month, that is the cheaper route even though the subscription is larger.

The best free Surfer alternative

  1. Surfer's own free Chrome extension. Keyword data and quick outlines inside Google, without a subscription.
  2. Rank Math's free plugin for WordPress sites: basic on-page checks as you write. It does not compare you against the SERP the way Surfer does.
  3. GrowGanic's free tier: one project, one article researched, written, scored and published, no card. Deliberately capped: it exists so you can judge the output before paying.

The best all-in-one alternative

If the reason you are looking beyond Surfer is that you keep needing a second and third tool around it (something for keyword research, someone to write, something to publish), then the replacement is not another editor.

GrowGanic is built for exactly that gap: it picks keywords for your niche, writes the article, scores it against on-page signals before publishing, and pushes it to your CMS or its hosted blog on a set schedule. The trade-off is control: you edit less line by line, and if you enjoy crafting each post, Surfer will suit you better. The free tier is the honest test: publish one article free, no card (affiliate link), and compare it with what your current Surfer workflow produces.

SEOZilla is the other option in this shape. Its plans start at $19.99 a month for about four articles (WordPress only), with $49.99 for about ten and $99.99 for about thirty, so check how many articles a plan really includes before budgeting.

Tools most similar to Surfer

Frase: closest, and now slightly cheaper

Starter at $49 ($39 annually) against Surfer Discovery's $59; Professional at $129 against Surfer Standard's $119; Scale at $299 against Surfer Pro's $219. A 7-day trial needs no card. Stronger than Surfer at research and briefs; Surfer is generally stronger at optimising an existing draft. The detail is in Surfer vs Frase.

Clearscope: closest on grading, for teams

Essentials at $129 and Business at $399, with unlimited users on every plan. That seat policy is the reason to pick it: for a team of five, per-seat tools overtake it quickly. For one person it is the expensive option. See Clearscope vs Surfer.

Who should stay on Surfer

  • You have writers and need a consistent optimisation standard across them.
  • You mostly refresh existing content: updating posts that already rank is where an editor earns its keep.
  • You want line-by-line control over every published sentence.
  • Discovery at $59 covers your volume. At that price there is little to save by switching to another editor.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cheaper alternative to Surfer SEO?

Frase Starter is $10 a month cheaper than Surfer Discovery at $49 against $59, so a cheaper editor mostly means a smaller one. Koala AI starts at $9 a month for AI writing. The bigger saving usually comes from changing the workflow: a tool that researches, writes and publishes costs less per finished article than an editor plus a writer.

Is there a free alternative to Surfer SEO?

There is no free content editor of Surfer's depth. Surfer offers a free Chrome extension, Rank Math's free WordPress plugin gives basic on-page checks, and GrowGanic's free tier researches, writes and publishes one scored article with no card.

What is the difference between Surfer and Frase?

Surfer is strongest at optimising a draft against what currently ranks; Frase at researching the SERP and turning it into a brief. Both now start near $50 a month (Frase Starter at $49, Surfer Discovery at $59), and both add AI writing.

Did Surfer SEO change its pricing?

Yes. The Essential and Scale plans most reviews still quote have been replaced by Discovery at $59, Standard at $119, Pro at $219 and Peace of Mind at $359 a month on monthly billing, with about 17% off annually.
