Semrush vs Surfer: where they overlap, and where you pay twice
Short answer
Semrush ($139.95 a month for Pro) is a full marketing research platform. Surfer ($59 a month for Discovery) is a content optimisation editor. Surfer cannot replace Semrush; Semrush can partly replace Surfer, because it includes content tools of its own. The expensive mistake is paying for both when you only use the content side of Semrush, or only the keyword side of Surfer.

The overlap map
| Capability | Semrush | Surfer |
|---|---|---|
| Competitor and keyword research | Core product | Limited |
| Backlink data | Yes | No |
| Paid-search research | Yes | No |
| Site audits | Yes | No |
| Content optimisation while writing | Yes, fuller on higher plans | Core product |
| AI drafting | Yes | Yes |
The overlap is the bottom two rows. If you pay for Semrush at a level that includes its content tools and also pay for Surfer, you are paying twice for content optimisation, which can still be the right call if your writers strongly prefer Surfer's editor, but should be a decision rather than an accident.
Choose Semrush if…
- You need competitor research, backlinks, audits or paid-search data.
- You want research and content tools under one subscription.
- Several people work from shared projects.
Choose Surfer if…
- Your work is writing and improving content, and you already know your topics.
- Search Console tells you enough about keywords for your own site.
- $139.95 a month for research you rarely open is hard to justify.
Or replace the content side entirely
If both subscriptions exist to feed a blog, the step neither removes is writing.

GrowGanic researches, writes, scores and publishes articles for $99 a month; it has no backlink or paid-search data, so it replaces Surfer and the content-planning use of Semrush, not Semrush's research suite. The free tier publishes one article on your domain without a card. Try the free tier (affiliate link).
The verdict
| If you are… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Doing full SEO and paid search | Semrush |

| Short on writing time | GrowGanic, free tier first |
Frequently asked questions
Can Semrush replace Surfer?
Partly. Semrush includes content tools, with the fuller content-marketing features on its higher plans. Teams already paying for Semrush at that level may not need Surfer. Writers who spend most of their time optimising drafts often still prefer a dedicated editor.
Can Surfer replace Semrush?
No. Surfer does not provide Semrush's competitor research, backlink data, site audits at scale or paid-search intelligence. It replaces only the content-optimisation part.
Is it worth paying for both?
For content teams publishing at volume who use Semrush for research and Surfer for drafts, it can be. For one person, $139.95 plus $59 is a large monthly cost for overlapping features.
