Ahrefs vs Surfer: research tool or content tool first?
Short answer
They are not alternatives to each other. Ahrefs (Lite $129 a month) tells you what to write and who links to competitors. Surfer (Discovery $59 a month) helps you write it well enough to compete. Buy research first if you do not know your topics; buy optimisation first if you have content that is not ranking. Together they cost $188 a month before anyone writes a word.
This comparison gets searched because both tools appear on every “best SEO tools” list, which makes them look like competitors. They are closer to two stages of the same process, and the useful question is which stage you are stuck on.

Two stages, not two rivals
| Stage | Tool | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Opportunity research | Ahrefs | Which keywords can I realistically win, and what do competitors rank for? |
| Link analysis | Ahrefs | Who links to competitors, and where are my gaps? |
| Content optimisation | Surfer | Does this draft cover the topic as well as what ranks? |
| Refreshing existing posts | Surfer | What should I change on a page that is slipping? |
Which to buy first
Research first, if you do not know what to write
Without a topic list, an optimisation editor has nothing to optimise. But research does not have to mean Ahrefs Lite: if your site already gets impressions, Search Console shows the queries you almost rank for, free. If it does not, a cheaper research tool such as KeySearch ($24) or Mangools ($29.90 billed annually) covers keyword research for a starting site. Ahrefs earns its price when link analysis becomes part of the job.
Optimisation first, if you have content that is not ranking
If you are publishing and pages sit on page two or three, the gap is usually coverage and quality, not a lack of keyword ideas. Surfer at $59 is the more direct fix.
Or skip the two-tool stack
The pairing (a research tool, an optimisation tool, and a writer between them) is the classic content stack and the reason budgets balloon. An autonomous tool collapses research, writing and scoring into one step.

GrowGanic does exactly that for $99 a month, publishing to your CMS on a schedule; it has no backlink index, so it replaces Surfer and the keyword side of Ahrefs, not Ahrefs' link data. Its free tier publishes one article on your domain without a card. Try the free tier (affiliate link).
The verdict
| If you are… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Starting a site with no topic list | A research tool: cheaper than Ahrefs to begin |
| Publishing but stuck on page two | Surfer |
| Doing link building | Ahrefs |
| Short on writing time | GrowGanic, free tier first |
| An established content team | Both, if budget allows |
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Ahrefs if I have Surfer?
Not necessarily. Surfer optimises content; Ahrefs finds keyword and backlink opportunities. If you already know what to write (for example from Search Console) Surfer alone can be enough. If you need competitor research or link analysis, Surfer does not replace Ahrefs.
Which should I buy first, Ahrefs or Surfer?
If you do not yet know what to write about, research comes first, though Ahrefs is not the only or cheapest research option. If you have topics and drafts but they are not ranking, optimisation comes first.
How much do Ahrefs and Surfer cost together?
Ahrefs Lite at $129 plus Surfer Discovery at $59 is $188 a month on monthly billing, before any writing costs.
