Rank Math MCP with Claude: connect it in five minutes, and know what it can change

By Giovanni Rasulo Updated Sources checked October 2026

Short answer

You connect Rank Math to Claude Desktop with a custom connector pointing at /wp-json/mcp/mcp-oauth-server on your site, then approve access in the browser. It works with the free Rank Math plugin and no password is shared. The alternative is a JSON config file, which needs Node.js and a WordPress application password. Once connected, Claude can run SEO audits, read scores and schema, and change settings. Competitor audits need Pro and the AI Visibility tools need the Content AI plan.

This is a documented walkthrough, not a test. It is built from Rank Math's own MCP guides for Claude Desktop, its setup guide and its tools reference. CheaperStack has not connected a live site and does not claim to. Menus in Claude Desktop move between versions, so read the screen as you go.

If you are still choosing between servers, Best SEO MCP servers compares what each one costs. This page is only the setup of one.

From Rank Math's Claude Desktop and setup guides, October 2026. The free plugin is enough to connect; paid plans only unlock specific tools, listed further down.

Method 1: OAuth connector (Rank Math's recommended route)

With OAuth, Claude reaches your site without you typing your WordPress password anywhere. Rank Math's guide gives these steps.

  1. Open the connector screen. In Claude Desktop, click your username, then Settings, then Customize, then Connectors, then Add.
  2. Enter the details. Put your site name in the Name field. In "Remote MCP server URL", enter https://your-site-url/wp-json/mcp/mcp-oauth-server, replacing your-site-url with your domain. Click Continue.
  3. Check two options. After Claude verifies the server, make sure Authentication is "Required when the server asks" and OAuth client is "Use Anthropic's hosted client metadata". Click Add, then Connect.
  4. Approve. Claude opens a browser tab. Click Allow. A confirmation message means you are connected.

Two details are easy to miss. Rank Math says you must be logged in to the same account in Claude Desktop and on claude.ai. And the guide does not say whether a local or password-protected staging site can be reached this way, so use a site that is live on HTTPS, as the URL in the guide is.

Method 2: JSON config file (the alternative)

Use this if OAuth does not work for you. It stores a password on your computer, so it is the less secure of the two, according to Rank Math's own comparison.

  1. Install Node.js on your computer.
  2. Create an application password. In WordPress, go to Users, Profile, scroll to Application Passwords, type a name such as "Claude Desktop MCP" and click Add Application Password. Copy the password immediately: WordPress will not show it again. Also copy your username from the same page.
  3. Open the config. In Claude Desktop, click your username, then Settings, then Developer, then Edit Config. Your editor opens claude_desktop_config.json.
  4. Add the server without deleting anything already in the file, using the block below.
  5. Save and restart Claude Desktop.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "your-site-url": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@automattic/mcp-wordpress-remote@latest"],
      "env": {
        "WP_API_URL": "https://your-site-url/wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server",
        "WP_API_USERNAME": "your-wordpress-username",
        "WP_API_PASSWORD": "your-application-password",
        "OAUTH_ENABLED": "false"
      }
    }
  }
}

Replace your-site-url in both places (the key name has no https://, the URL does), plus the username and password. Block reproduced from Rank Math's guide; check it against the current version before you paste.

How to revoke access

In WordPress, go to Users, Profile, scroll to Application Passwords and click Revoke next to Claude's entry, then confirm. The connection ends immediately. Rank Math warns that this cannot be undone: to reconnect you repeat the setup. On the JSON route you also delete the block from the config file.

What Claude can do once connected

Rank Math's tools reference lists 28 tools. Most are read-only; the ones marked Write change your site.

Grouped from Rank Math's MCP tools reference, October 2026. Rank Math's own example prompts include "Run a site-wide SEO audit", "Show posts with low SEO scores" and "Fetch all active redirects".

Safe first prompts

Start with read-only requests so you see what Claude returns before it touches anything. Rank Math's guide suggests asking Claude to list the available tools, then running an audit, which comes back with failed tests, warnings and notes on the tests it ran.

  1. "List the Rank Math MCP tools you can use."
  2. "Run a site-wide SEO audit and group the failures by priority."
  3. "Show posts with low SEO scores."
  4. "Fetch all active redirects."

These prompts are our wording around Rank Math's documented tools. Our caution, not Rank Math's: the Set tools and the fix tool can change live settings, so ask Claude to describe what it would change and wait for your yes, and try them on a staging copy with a backup first.

Why this is a free connection

Everything above, including the connection itself, works with the free Rank Math plugin. The affiliate link below is for Rank Math itself and earns a commission only if you later buy a paid plan, which MCP never requires. Pro is $107.88 a year for unlimited personal sites, and adds the competitor audit through MCP. If you are on Yoast, the move is covered in Yoast to Rank Math migration. Who should skip this

  • Sites not on WordPress. This is a plugin feature; it does nothing for Shopify, Webflow or a static site.
  • Anyone who wants market data. Rank Math MCP reads and manages your own site. Backlinks, competitor keywords and search volumes come from tools such as Ahrefs or Semrush, covered in Best SEO MCP servers.
  • Anyone who cannot test on a copy. Some tools write to live settings. If you have no staging site or backup, use the read-only tools only.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Rank Math Pro to use MCP with Claude?

No. Rank Math says the free plugin is enough to set up MCP. Pro or the AI plan is needed only for specific tools: a competitor audit needs Pro, and the AI Visibility tools need the Content AI plan.

Is it safe to give Claude access to my WordPress site?

The OAuth route does not expose your WordPress password: Claude gets its own application password, which you can revoke from your WordPress profile at any time. Some tools can change settings, so connect a staging copy first and review what Claude proposes before it applies changes.

Does it work with the Claude web app or only Claude Desktop?

Rank Math's guide covers Claude Desktop only. It also publishes separate guides for ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot. This page does not claim support for any other Claude surface.

OAuth or the JSON file: which should I use?

Rank Math recommends OAuth. It needs no Node.js and no password in a file on your computer, and you can revoke it in one click. The JSON method is the alternative if OAuth does not work for you, and it needs Node.js plus an application password.
