Best SEO MCP servers: the protocol is free, the data is not

By Giovanni Rasulo Updated Prices checked September 2026

Short answer

The Ahrefs MCP and Semrush MCP servers cost nothing extra, but you need a paid plan first: Ahrefs from Lite, Semrush from its Starter or Pro tier, with no free access on either. SE Ranking includes its server on every plan and DataForSEO charges per call after a $50 minimum. The free ones are the WordPress SEO plugins' own-site connections: Rank Math's MCP tools, AIOSEO's MCP server on its free Lite version, and the Abilities in Yoast and SEOPress. They manage your own site rather than returning market data. Which one you need depends on which of those two jobs you have.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT call tools in another product. For SEO it means you can ask "which keywords does this competitor rank for?" in a chat and have the assistant pull the answer from your Ahrefs or Semrush account instead of you exporting a spreadsheet. The protocol costs nothing. The confusing part, and the reason most roundups skip pricing, is that every vendor charges for the data behind it in a different way.

Monthly billing, checked against each vendor's own documentation and pricing pages in September 2026. SE Ranking, Ahrefs and Semrush prices are the entry plans that include MCP access. Some vendors show euro prices to European visitors; the dollar figures here are the US ones used elsewhere on this site.

Two different jobs, not two competing products

The tools in that table do not compete with each other, and the comparison goes wrong when you treat them as if they did.

  • Market data servers (Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, DataForSEO) let an assistant look outward: competitor keywords, backlinks, search volumes, rankings. You pay for the data, and the assistant is just a faster way to ask for it.
  • Site management servers (Rank Math) let an assistant look at and change your own site: run an audit, read a page's schema, fix a supported issue, update a redirect. There is no market data in it, and no competitor research on the free plugin.

A team that already works inside Claude might reasonably use one of each: Ahrefs to decide what to write, Rank Math to check and fix the page once it is on WordPress.

Ahrefs MCP

Ahrefs runs a hosted remote MCP server, so there is nothing to install locally. Its help center documents API access for Lite plans and above ($129 a month on monthly billing), and states that the MCP server shares the same units and integration limits as direct API access. In practice that means the assistant spends your monthly allowance every time it asks a question, and a chat full of broad backlink queries can use more of it than you expect. Starter, at $29, is not listed among the plans with API access.

The value here is the data: Ahrefs is still the reference for backlinks. If that is already your tool, MCP is included in what you pay. If it is not, adding Ahrefs only for MCP is the most expensive route to the same answers. The plan comparison is in Ahrefs alternatives.

Semrush MCP

Semrush's official MCP server exposes its SEO API and Trends API, plus read-only access to Projects (the assistant can read project data but cannot create or change it). Semrush lists Semrush One Starter, One Pro+, SEO Classic Pro and SEO Classic Guru as including 50,000 API units, refreshed on the renewal date. Business and One Advanced need a separate unit package, and any Trends API subscription includes MCP. There is no free access.

Units are consumed per request and vary by report type, so 50,000 is a budget to watch, not an unlimited feature. The price of the underlying plans and the alternatives are in Semrush alternatives.

SE Ranking MCP

SE Ranking is the easiest of the full platforms to try. Its MCP server, with more than 160 tools, is included across its plans, and its API trial gives 14 days and 100,000 credits with MCP included from day one. Its entry platform plan is Core at $129 a month, and it also sells API access separately. It is the one to test if you want to know what an assistant does with real SEO data before committing to Ahrefs or Semrush pricing.

DataForSEO MCP

DataForSEO has no plans at all. You add money (the minimum payment is $50), each call draws it down, and there is no monthly fee. That makes it the cheapest serious way to give an assistant SERP, keyword and backlink data if you use it occasionally, and it gets expensive the moment an assistant starts running many broad queries. It is a data feed, with no dashboard behind it, so it suits people comfortable working in a chat rather than an interface.

AI visibility trackers with MCP

A newer group exposes brand-in-AI-answers data to assistants. Otterly AI lists MCP access from its Standard plan at $189 a month, 2,000 requests a month, and 5,000 on Premium at $489; its $29 Lite plan does not list it. Peec AI includes MCP on every plan from Starter ($95 a month), API access from Pro and a Looker Studio connector from Advanced, which makes it the cheapest tracker here with an MCP connection. The plans are compared in Otterly AI vs Peec AI.

Rank Math MCP: free, and one of four WordPress options

Rank Math is the free option with the longest tool list on this page. Its MCP connection works with the free Rank Math SEO plugin: Rank Math's setup guide says you do not need a paid plan to use MCP itself. Its own guide lists 28 tools, covering site and post audits, SEO scores, schema markup, robots.txt, redirects, Search Console keywords and AI visibility, and it works with Claude Desktop, ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot.

It is not the only WordPress option any more. AIOSEO has its own MCP server that runs on its free Lite version, with 13 abilities and more in Pro, and it supports Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor but not ChatGPT. Yoast exposes SEO scores and, since 29 September 2026, technical field updates through the WordPress Abilities API. SEOPress 10 offers Abilities too, 8 of them free. The side-by-side is in WordPress SEO plugins for AI search.

Rank Math documents two ways to connect. In Claude Desktop you can add a custom connector pointing at your site's /wp-json/mcp/mcp-oauth-server address and approve access with OAuth, so Claude never sees your WordPress password. The older route runs a small bridge on your computer with Node.js and a WordPress application password, which you can revoke from your WordPress profile at any time.

Three things worth knowing before you switch it on:

  • It is not read-only. Alongside the audit tools there are tools that fix supported issues and change settings, homepage SEO, breadcrumbs, sitemaps and module status. Treat it like giving an assistant an admin login for SEO settings: try it on a staging copy first and keep a backup.
  • Some tools need a paid plan. Rank Math says that auditing a competitor's site through MCP needs Rank Math Pro, and retrieving an AI Visibility report needs its AI plan. The free plugin gives you the connection and the on-site tools.
  • It is about your site, not the market. It will not tell you what a competitor ranks for or who links to them. That is what the servers above are for.

The connection steps are in Rank Math MCP with Claude. This is why a WordPress site owner does not need to buy anything to get started: install the free plugin, connect an assistant, and try it. The affiliate link below is for Rank Math itself, so it earns a commission only if you later buy a paid plan, and you never need one to use MCP. If you will use the Pro features, $107.88 a year covers unlimited personal sites, and the full comparison with Yoast, AIOSEO and SEOPress is in Rank Math alternatives. What actually drives the cost

  • Units, not seats. On Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and DataForSEO the assistant spends credits or units on every call. A vague question ("analyze this competitor") can trigger many calls. Ask narrow questions and watch the usage screen the first week.
  • The plan underneath. Ahrefs and Semrush charge nothing for MCP itself, but you cannot use it without a $129 to $140 subscription. If you do not already have one, that is the real price.
  • Write access. Only Rank Math can change your site. Every other server here is read-only or close to it, which limits what can go wrong.
  • Setup time. Hosted servers connect in a few minutes with OAuth. Local bridges need Node.js, which is fine for a developer and a wall for many marketers.

Who should skip MCP for now

If you open your SEO tool twice a week and export the same report, MCP saves you very little and can cost you units. Stay in the dashboard if you use a tool's interface for visual work such as site audits, rank graphs or link-gap views, because a chat answer is a summary, not a chart. Stay on your current tool if you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush: the server is included, so try it before adding anything. And if you do not run WordPress, Rank Math's server is not for you at all.

If the real gap is that nobody has time to write, an assistant that reads your SEO data does not fix it. It only helps you decide what to write faster. Free options that answer real questions without any server include Google Search Console for your own queries and the free tools in best free SEO tools.

If the bottleneck is producing the content

None of the servers above publishes anything. They let an assistant read data and, in Rank Math's case, adjust settings. GrowGanic is not an MCP server and is not part of this comparison; it addresses the other half of the problem. It is an autonomous SEO engine: add a domain and it researches the keywords, writes and scores the articles, publishes them to your site or a hosted blog, and tracks the rankings. On a paid plan it publishes every weekday. It has no backlink index, and, by GrowGanic's own account, the hosted copy of the free article stays out of Google until the plan is paid (connecting your site or a subdomain first avoids that), so it works next to a research tool rather than replacing one. The free tier gives you one article with no card. Try the free tier (affiliate link).

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ahrefs MCP server free?

No. Ahrefs documents API access, which the MCP server shares, for Lite plans and above, so you need a paid subscription. Every call the assistant makes uses the same monthly API allowance as direct API use.

Does the Semrush MCP server need a paid plan?

Yes, and there is no free access. Semrush lists Semrush One Starter, One Pro+, SEO Classic Pro and SEO Classic Guru as including 50,000 API units that refresh on the renewal date. SEO Classic Business and Semrush One Advanced need a separately bought unit package. Any Trends API subscription also includes MCP.

Which SEO MCP server is free?

The WordPress SEO plugins' own-site connections: Rank Math's MCP tools, AIOSEO's MCP server (on its free Lite version), and the Abilities in Yoast and SEOPress. Rank Math works with the free plugin, with no paid plan needed for the MCP connection itself. These connections read and manage your own site's SEO rather than giving market data, and Rank Math says Pro features such as a competitor audit, or AI features such as an AI Visibility report, need the matching paid plan even through MCP.

What is the cheapest way to get keyword and backlink data through MCP?

DataForSEO has no subscription: the minimum payment is $50 and you pay per call afterwards. SE Ranking includes its MCP server on every plan and its API trial gives 14 days and 100,000 credits. Ahrefs and Semrush both require a full paid plan first.
