Guide · Free tiers, caps included
The best free SEO tools in 2027, with the real limits written down
Short answer
Start with Google Search Console: free, unlimited, and the only real source of your own search data. Add Bing Webmaster Tools and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for audits and backlinks on sites you verify, Screaming Frog for technical crawls up to 500 URLs, and Google Keyword Planner for volume ranges. That stack covers your own site well. What free tools cannot give you is dependable competitor data, or content produced for you.
“Free SEO tool” covers three very different things: tools that are genuinely free with no cap worth worrying about, free tiers designed to be outgrown, and trials described as free. This page only lists the first two, and says which is which. Trials that need a card are not free tools.

For your own site's data
Google Search Console
If you install one tool, install this. It shows the queries your pages appear for, impressions, clicks, average position, indexing problems and Core Web Vitals, with around sixteen months of performance history. Every paid tool shows estimates of this; Search Console shows what actually happened. Its limitation is scope: your verified sites only, nothing about competitors.
Bing Webmaster Tools
The same idea for Bing, plus a site scan and keyword research. Bing's share is smaller than Google's, but the setup takes minutes (it can import a site already verified in Search Console), and it occasionally surfaces issues Google's report does not emphasise.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
Ahrefs' site audit and backlink data, free, for domains you verify. It is the most generous free offer from a paid SEO vendor, and the catch is intentional: no competitor research, which is what the paid plans sell.
For keyword research
Google Keyword Planner
Free inside a Google Ads account. Accounts that are not running campaigns typically see volume as broad ranges (“1K–10K”), rather than exact figures. That is enough to rank keywords against each other, which is most of what keyword research is for.
Google Trends
No absolute volumes, but the best free way to see whether interest is growing, seasonal or fading, which a single monthly volume figure hides.
Ubersuggest (free tier)
A limited number of free searches per day, with keyword ideas and difficulty. Useful for a quick session; the paid plan starts at $29 a month or $290 for a lifetime licence.
Semrush free account
A small daily allowance of reports. Enough to glance at a competitor, not enough to work in. It exists to show you what Pro at $139.95 would unlock.
For technical checks
Screaming Frog SEO Spider
The standard desktop crawler, free for up to 500 URLs per crawl, more than enough for most small sites. Broken links, redirects, missing titles, duplicate content. A licence at about £199 a year removes the limit and adds JavaScript rendering and integrations.
PageSpeed Insights
Google's own speed and Core Web Vitals report for any URL, with field data where Google has it. Free, no account.

For content
Rank Math (free plugin)
For WordPress sites: titles, meta descriptions, schema and basic on-page checks while you write. Rule-based rather than based on what currently ranks, but a solid free baseline.
Surfer's free Chrome extension
Keyword data and quick outlines inside Google results, without a Surfer subscription.
GrowGanic (free tier)
The one free tool here that produces content rather than analysing it: one project, one article researched, written, scored and published, with no card. It is capped at a single article on purpose: a way to judge the output, not a free content plan. One detail worth knowing: by GrowGanic's own account, the hosted copy of the free article stays out of Google until the plan is paid; connecting your site or a subdomain before the first article avoids that. Try the free tier (affiliate link).
A complete free stack in an afternoon
- Verify your site in Search Console; submit your sitemap.
- Import it into Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Verify it in Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and run the first audit.
- Crawl it with Screaming Frog and fix broken links and missing titles.
- Check your three most important pages in PageSpeed Insights.
- Plan your next topics from the Search Console queries where you sit on page two, sanity-checked in Keyword Planner and Trends.
What free tools cannot do
- Reliable competitor research. Collecting it is expensive, so nobody gives much of it away.
- Precise keyword volumes for sites that do not advertise.
- Produce content at volume. Free tiers that write are capped at a sample.
When you hit one of those walls, the cheapest paid tools that work is the next step: most useful paid tools start under $50 a month.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free SEO tool?
Google Search Console. It is free, unlimited for your own sites, and the only source of the actual queries, impressions and clicks your pages receive from Google. Every other tool estimates what it shows.
Can you do SEO with only free tools?
For your own site, largely yes: Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Screaming Frog's free crawler and PageSpeed Insights cover performance data, audits and technical checks. What free tools do not give you is reliable competitor data or content produced for you.
Is Google Keyword Planner free?
Yes, with a Google Ads account. Accounts not running campaigns typically see search volume as broad ranges rather than exact figures, enough to compare keywords, not to forecast traffic.
Is Screaming Frog free?
The SEO Spider is free for crawls of up to 500 URLs. A paid licence removes the limit and adds features such as JavaScript rendering and integrations.
