Rank Math schema markup: how to set it up, and which types Google still shows

By Giovanni Rasulo Updated Sources checked October 2026

Short answer

Turn on Rank Math's Schema module, set a default type for posts and pages in Titles and Meta, then adjust single pages in the Schema tab. The free plugin covers the types that matter most: Article, Person, Organization, Product, Recipe, Video and Software Application. Pro adds several types per page, a custom builder and a code validator. The biggest 2026 change: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026, so FAQ markup no longer earns a visual result. Valid markup makes a page eligible for a feature; it never guarantees one.

This is a documented walkthrough, not a test. It is built from Rank Math's schema documentation and from Google Search Central's structured data pages and changelog, checked in October 2026. CheaperStack has not measured ranking or click changes from any markup and does not claim any. Menus change between plugin versions, so read the screen as you go.

Schema is also one of the practical trust signals in the E-E-A-T guide. This page is the how-to.

What schema does, and what it does not

  • It describes the page. Structured data tells Google what a page is about in a machine-readable form. Google's rule is that the markup must represent content visible to readers. Never mark up what is not on the page.
  • It makes you eligible, not guaranteed. Google says valid markup enables a rich result but does not ensure it appears.
  • It is not documented as a ranking boost. For Article markup, Google says it helps with the title text, images and date shown in results, and with understanding who the author is. No required properties.
  • Mistakes can cost you the feature. Structured data problems can trigger a manual action, which removes rich result eligibility. Google says that does not change ranking in regular web search.

Which types are worth adding in 2026

Google's structured data gallery, last updated 15 June 2026, lists 25 features. Here are the ones a typical WordPress site can use, set against what Rank Math offers.

From Google's structured data gallery, its documentation changelog, and Rank Math's rich snippets documentation, October 2026. "Not in the gallery" means Google lists no rich result for it, not that the markup is invalid.

The practical reading: Article, author and organization markup, Breadcrumb and Product are where the effort still pays off. FAQ is the one to stop investing in. Google retired Course info, Estimated salary, Learning video, Special announcement and Vehicle listing in September 2025 and the practice problem type in January 2026, so the list changes every year. Check the gallery before you build a template around a type.

Set it up in Rank Math, step by step

  1. Check the module is on. Go to Rank Math SEO, Dashboard, and confirm the Schema (Structured Data) module is enabled.
  2. Set defaults for posts. Go to Rank Math SEO, Titles and Meta, open Posts, find Schema Type, pick one (Article is the usual choice) and save.
  3. Repeat for pages and for any custom post types that appear in the menu.
  4. Edit a single page. In the Classic Editor, open the Rank Math metabox and its Schema tab (enable Rank Math under Screen Options if it is hidden). In the Block Editor, open Rank Math from the sidebar and choose the Schema tab.
  5. Change the type. Delete the default schema with its delete icon and confirm, click Schema Generator, choose a type from the list, fill the fields and save.
  6. Add a second type by clicking Schema Generator again. Several types on one page is a Pro feature.
  7. Set who publishes the site. The Person or Organization schema comes from Rank Math's Local SEO module, where you say whether the site is run by a person or an organization.

Two notes from Rank Math's documentation. On the free plugin, FAQ and HowTo are added through their blocks in the Block Editor, not the Schema Generator. And some types are applied automatically without configuration, such as Carousel, ItemList, Q&A Page and Sitelinks Search Box; Rank Math says that last one is no longer supported by Google.

Author markup that Google can use

If you only get one thing right, make it the author. Google's Article guidance recommends listing every author shown on the page, each with its own entry, and using Person for people and Organization for organizations. Put only the name in the name field, and give each author a url or sameAs link, which Google uses to tell authors apart. The markup must match the visible byline.

"author": {
  "@type": "Person",
  "name": "Jane Example",
  "url": "https://example.com/about/jane/",
  "sameAs": ["https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-example"]
}

A pattern shown for illustration, with placeholder names. Rank Math fills these fields from its schema screen and your author profile; check the output on a real page.

This is a trust signal, not a shortcut. It says who wrote the page. It does not supply the expertise, which has to be visible in the content, as the E-E-A-T guide explains.

Ratings and reviews: the risky one

Review markup is where comparison and affiliate sites get into trouble. Google's review snippet rules say you must name the specific item (a category or a list of items does not qualify), the ratings must be visible on the page, and you must not include fake reviews or undisclosed incentivized ones. For local businesses, ratings must come from users, not from editors. Google's page has no special guidance for editorial product comparisons.

So the safe policy is simple: do not mark up star ratings you invented or scored yourself on a page that is not a genuine review of one item. CheaperStack does not use review or rating markup on any page, because its pages are documented comparisons, not tests.

How to test it

  • Google's Rich Results Test shows which rich result features a page is eligible for. It recognizes only Google's supported types.
  • The Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org checks any schema.org type, including ones with no Google feature. Rank Math itself suggests it for those.
  • On Rank Math Pro, open the Schema, then the Code Validation tab and click Test with Google. Rank Math pastes the code rather than the URL, so unpublished drafts can be tested.
  • Search Console shows enhancement reports for the features Google still supports. Check them a few weeks after a change.

If you have connected Claude to your site, Rank Math's MCP tools include a read-only Get Post Schema tool that returns the schema on a post; the connection steps are in Rank Math MCP with Claude.

Common mistakes

  • Marking up what readers cannot see. Google's rule is that markup must match visible content.
  • Adding FAQ schema for a rich result. That feature is retired. Write FAQs for readers, not for the markup.
  • Two sources of schema. If your theme and another SEO plugin also output Article markup, you can end up with duplicates. Rank Math discourages running two SEO plugins, and our advice is to test one page and look for conflicts. This is practical advice, not a Google rule.
  • Fabricated ratings. See the section above.
  • Treating schema as a ranking lever. Google documents it as eligibility and understanding.
  • Setting and forgetting. Google removed or flagged several types in 2025 and 2026. Re-check once or twice a year.

Do you need Pro for schema?

For most sites, no. The free plugin covers the defaults, per-page types, Person and Organization, Product and the other types above. Pro is worth it if you need several schema types on one page, reusable templates with display conditions, a custom schema builder, import from existing JSON-LD, or the built-in code validator. Pro is $107.88 a year for unlimited personal sites; the full comparison is in Rank Math alternatives. If you are comparing it with Yoast, see Rank Math vs Yoast. Get Rank Math (affiliate link).

Who should skip this

  • Sites not on WordPress. This is Rank Math's workflow. The Google rules apply anywhere, but the steps do not.
  • Anyone expecting rankings. Schema describes a page. It will not rescue a thin one.
  • Sites happy with their current plugin. If Yoast or another plugin already outputs correct Article and author markup, do not switch for schema alone.

A blogger on free Rank MathSet Article as the default, add Person or Organization, validate one post, stop there.
Running a shop on WooCommerceUse Product schema and check it against the Product feature in Google's gallery.
Carrying lots of FAQ markupLeave it if it matches visible FAQs, but add no more for rich results.
Publishing comparisons or reviewsNo rating markup unless you have genuine, visible ratings for one named item.
Needing several types on one pageThat is a Pro feature.
Wanting trust signalsStart with author and organization markup, then read the E-E-A-T guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is schema markup a Google ranking factor?

Google does not document it as one. Valid markup makes a page eligible for a rich result where a feature exists, and Article markup helps Google understand who wrote a page and when. Google also says it does not guarantee that structured data will show up in search results.

Does Google still show FAQ rich results?

No. Google's changelog says FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Search from 7 May 2026, and it removed the documentation on 15 June 2026. FAQPage is still valid schema.org markup, but do not add it expecting a visual result.

Do I need Rank Math Pro for schema?

Not for the common types. The free plugin includes Article, BlogPosting, Person, Organization, Product, Recipe, Video, Software Application and more. Pro adds several schema types on one page, a custom schema builder, templates and a code validation tool.

Should I remove FAQ schema I already have?

Nothing in the Google documentation checked for this guide requires removing it. If you keep it, it must still match the FAQs visible on the page. Do not spend time adding more of it.

Can I add star ratings to a comparison page?

Only if the ratings are real and visible on the page, refer to a specific named item, and are not fabricated or undisclosed incentivized reviews. Google gives no special guidance for editorial comparisons, so skip rating markup unless you have genuine rating data.
